What are you doing in your training?

A mistake many martial artists make in regards to their art is thinking it is “the solution” for self-defense. My personal opinion is I haven’t seen a martial art that really covers all the skills well.

What do I mean by this? Well there is the whole avoidance/defusing thing that the majority of martial arts don’t even bother covering. It is “if a person grabs you by the throat then you do move x” (sometimes moves x,y,z, and z again for good measure). Why was this person grabbing you to begin with? What lead up to that situation and what could you have done to either not have been there or attempt to defuse the situation if you were there?

Another aspect often missed is the various skills. There is striking, grappling, escapes, control holds, etc. You may not always need them but knowing some basics in each area could save your butt.
